Intro to May 2017 Essays

Okay here we go...

❶It is the choices of the AOKs that are crucial in the determination of the response to the question and you will notice that the title is in the form of a question. Natural science can be less reliable because it relies on observation.

The result is faulty theories. Then there is the problem with poorly vetted facts. Explain how outdated or incorrect information impacts the development of theories. With this topic, any of the areas of knowledge could be excellent for potential exploration. When building their own knowledge, people turn to experts. How do they discern what to believe when the experts themselves disagree on important matters?

Can external influences change the way that experts view or spin the truth? Climate change would be a great topic to use as an example for this question. Maybe explore how to write historical text in a more sympathetic way. Because this is such a broad question, once again all areas of knowledge could be subject to exploration here.

The idea here is that the harder you have to work to obtain knowledge the more you will value it. Do you agree or disagree? You might address the topic of privilege here. So, how do you pick the right topic? Look at each extended example above. As an IB student, you are familiar with all of the areas of knowledge.

You might also consider looking at an exemplar online for each question that you are considering. Just google tipstok essay example, and you will likely find something. Mostly, you should pick a question that speaks to you, and apply the areas of knowledge that you can best show your academic and personal development.

First and foremost, study the rubric that your teacher provides for you. This will be an amazing guide. Unfortunately, it is not complete.

You may have to follow up and get more information on the standards for marking your essay. Here are the criteria by which your essay will be assessed. Then in counterargument I would use examples from RKS where increased knowledge has not increased doubt, and may have increased confidence. Further, finding examples from Nat Sciences where increased knowledge has increased doubt, and possibly reduced confidence.

RKS for the proposal Counter 1: Natsci against the propsal Argue 2: RKS against the proposal Counter 2: Without assuming uniformities there can be no knowledge.

This is a patterns vs exceptions essay. Genre change in the Arts, the importance of exceptions in ethics. Is suspension of disbelief essential in AoKs? I think that either approach would be acceptable. Disbelief in the Arts could be a willingness to accept the abstracted or reified, whilst disbelief in the Natural Sciences could be the use of conceptual representation in the place of empirical certainty for example molecular diagrams in Chemistry, or the description of nuclear fission in Physics.

An interesting discussion about Indigenous Knowledge Systems could posit that suspending disbelief is central to the very definition of some IKS.

By setting this up as a subjectivity vs objectivity debate it would be easier to develop the counterarguments that suspension of disbelief is not required for knowledge.

The older the discipline the higher the quality of knowledge of that discipline. The term historical development could infer that the discipline has developed ie changed over time, as such students could set up static disciplines against dynamic disciplines in counter argument.

The quote refers to academic disciplines. However, I think the focus of the essay should be on the debate of whether the duration of development is linked to quality of knowledge. There are also interesting discussions to be had with this essay concerning the fossilisation and petrification of knowledge. Is an agreement to disagree actually a form of consensus?

One way of looking at this essay is to go into the process of knowledge production. The essay partly hinges around the definition of the word robust. This is just a first look at the essays. A little bit more of thoughts on those 3 titles. Thanks for the initial synopsis of each of the titles. I look forward to your detailed analysis as always. By detailed analysis are you referring to completed essays cuz you can go ask your academic honesty for that if a substance like that even exists in your pond of ethicality.

This is often called unpacking. Hi Daniel, When are you going to post the detailed analysis for this years titles? Hi Daniel, thank you for you information. Could you please explain more about the second essay title? Dear Daniel Your briefing was very helpful to put me on the right track. Thank you so much for your help.

Hi Zeina, use 2 AoKs that you are familiar with, and that you are interested in. Your KQs should be developed by you, and should enable you to engage in the essay in a way which works for you. All of the AOKs are appropriate for examination through this title. In the Natural Sciences, the knowledge questions arising from relativity and quantum physics is a good example to explore.

You might explore this quote from Werner Heisenberg: Our scientific work in physics consists in asking questions about nature in the language that we possess and trying to get an answer from experiment by the means that are at our disposal. Connections can be made between the surety and certainty of a world view that provides a mathematically calculable universe and the certainty that those calculations provide to any researcher anywhere in the world in the surety of their findings in their calculations.

Be sure to use TOK language when discussing the examples i. Make reference to the knowledge framework. You might want to explore how our focus has turned to the artist as agent or creator rather than on the work of art itself and what the essence of art might be.

How have the discoveries of modern physics changed how we view the Arts today? Title 3 is a challenging one and can present a number of traps for the unwary TOK student. In many ways it is very similar to title 2. Again, by examining the various types of knowledge that are discussed in What is Knowledge? Once again, Reason and Language as WOKs can be used to discuss this title and Sense Perception as a WOK can be used to provide juxtapositions or counter claims with regard to the need required for accuracy in what we determine knowledge to be in the AOKs that you choose.

Title 3 and Title 4 are very close to each other in terms of the concepts that they are using i. Obviously, one hopes for accuracy in the products that are the result of the knowledge when it comes to engineering, etc. Such a desire for accuracy is not required when it comes to the Arts.

There are lots of possibilities and directions here. In choosing your AOKs, you will need to look at what knowledge is conceived to be in those AOKs and how this knowledge is communicated. How does knowledge understood as theoretical, techne, phronesis, and noesis operate in the AOKs that you have chosen? When we speak of knowledge in The Human Sciences, for instance, why do we use models and statistics as choices for communicating the knowledge or results discovered there?

What is knowledge in the Human Sciences? For what end is this knowledge to be put? In order for knowledge to become more accurate it must have been conceived as less accurate beforehand, that the prior viewing was somehow found wanting. In History we search for the causes of events using Reason in order to gain an explanation and an understanding of those events.

The event in its standing is the object of our research. Title 4 is not primarily about the nature of knowledge the theoretical but the way knowledge is constructed or arrived at, the results: The theory is already assumed.

From where the methodology arises should be explored i. Peer review, verification, the rigour of the procedures required by the methodology itself, clear criteria in the carrying out of the actions to arrive at the results are concepts that we seem to value in many AOKS whether they be in the Sciences or the Arts. The principle of reason is what supports or grounds the knowledge claims made in the AOKs requiring that non-contradiction, coherence and sufficient reasons be demonstrated.

The principle of reason demands that we seek reliability in our use of mathematics to report our results whether as statistics or as some other mathematical equation. Counter claims can be explored in how the results and their reliability are communicated in the Human and Natural sciences. What is most important in relation to the title is that a balanced discussion of the two AOKs required is rendered.

Title 6 is very open in that the responses required and expected depend on the interpretation of the key concepts inherent in the title: How these key concepts are used in the AOKs chosen will depend upon your use of the knowledge framework which will illustrate your understanding of the key concepts.

This will require the proper use of citations. These representations in the title can be understood as referring to noetic knowledge and techne as knowledge. The title requires a great deal of constraint and focus on the WOKs and the AOKs chosen as all are possible and you can become lost in the myriad of choices.

Counter claims can be explored through negative examples of the inability to bring forth or with the discarding of knowledge. Imagination and intuition are possible WOKs should you choose to focus on this aspect of the title. Creativity is the bringing forth or the leading forth into the completedness that is the finished product. You are commenting using your WordPress. You are commenting using your Twitter account.
